Progress

The progress Robert Runyan has made on a timber-frame pavilion in a wooded park in Fayetteville is just amazing.

Puppetry in the Park

It was cold and rain threatened the Puppetry in the Park event, but a little patience and some nice light from the clouds yielded a nice photo.

I wish I was 8 years old again.

Spring football

Arkansas held its annual Red-White spring game on the same day that Darren McFadden and Felix Jones were taken in the NFL Draft — fitting since this was the first look fans had at life without them.

Black and Brown

University of Arkansas students took part in a conference concerning the plight of Latinos and African-Americans in Arkansas and danced to merengue music.

The lost baseball game

Shiloh Christian and Elkins needed to make up two games and had to go all the way to Lincoln to find a dry field and play.

I finally found them in the fourth inning.

Clotheslined

The University of Arkansas continues its version of the Clothesline Project this week and has on display rows and rows of T-shirts with messages concerning rape and relationship violence. It makes a stunning display.

Earth Day

An Indonesian student tries out Donna Stjerna's fiddle during an Earth Day celebration at a local wetland prairie preserve. It was fun to see the students and the musicians react to one another and I really dig the photo.

Camp basketball

Shooting basketball camps is so much different than shooting a game. The play is different since each player is trying to impress coaches in the stands and normally, I am asked to get a specific player instead of just shooting what happens. Invariably, this player has a bad game, sits out long stretches of action and seems to be the only one you have not made a good, strong photo of.

When I was asked to shoot Fred Gulley, a standout player for Fayetteville High and recruit of Missouri and Arkansas, I was certain this was not going to happen. He has the ability to take over games so surly this will be a snap.

This is the only photo I got of him in an entire game.

Outreach

The University of Arkansas is beginning a program of outreach for the Hispanic community, a group of students that is growing but that is often neglected. The person shown here worked so hard to learn English, gain his citizenship and work to save money and secure funding to be able to be the first Hispanic student from Green Forest to attend the University of Arkansas.

Pretty cool.

A surprise

Fayetteville, a powerhouse in softball, struggled at first with Dover, but scratched a couple of runs together. The Dover dugout was funny to listen to and specializes in making a sound akin to frogs at night. Very country.

Architecture at the garden

Students from the University of Arkansas built a performance space by weaving strips of wood at the Botanical Garden of the Ozarks. This event made me miss being in college as I watched the students work and laugh together.

Good game

Fayetteville and Bishop Kelley played an entertaining game this afternoon and without getting this guy at the plate, it would have gone the other way for the Dogs.

OUCH!!

Even though this is a kid from Russellville, we wanted to run it any way.

Wild art

We have a loose newspaper tomorrow so I set out to get some wild art and found a kid and his step-father playing basketball in the park. I love his giggly face.

Opening Day

Fayetteville's Parks and Recreation Division gives its annual report on opening day for adult league softball.

You could call it a slow news day.

Another meltdown

After going up 8-2, the Hogs lose another one in extra innings — and of course I have to leave before the end.

Hogs finally win one

Arkansas nickels and dimes Auburn behind a good start from junior Justin Wells.

Hogs lose another

Arkansas falls to 2-7 in the conference and we're taking a break from planning for the NCAA Regional.

Football? Are you serious?

Arkansas began spring football today in the coal mine they have taken to calling their indoor practice facility.
