Bob Harlan, president of the Fayetteville Evening Lions Club, right, works to remove the binding from Christmas trees with members of the Beta Rho chapter of Alpha Phi Omega Fraternity at the University of Arkansas, from right, Sarah Wood, a freshman from North Little Rock; Cyrena Hattabaugh, a sophomore from Waldron; and Tracie Sconyers, a sophomore from Monkey Island, Okla., at the club's tree lot at 2035 N. College Ave. in Fayetteville. The students are helping the Evening Lions Club with their tree sales as a service project and hope to help with sales and with unloading trees. The Evening Lions Club has sold trees in the lot at the former Malco Razorback Cinema 6 since 1964, and uses funds raised from sales to support local charities and its mission to help those with vision impairment.
According to Harlan, the club is down to about 10 members and it needed the help of these ladies to be able to operate the lot. Normally, there is a member of the club there at all times to help with sales, but now they have an "Honor Box," which is basically an ammunition box locked to a light pole where folks are encouraged to deposit their money.
"These gals are a lifesaver this year," Harlan said. "There's a little bit of good in everybody."
I remember when the Lions and Kiwanis clubs were huge and well-populated with folks throughout the community. My grandfather was one of them. I guess people have stopped joining them.

That's crap. We should become Lions. I can roar really loud! Unfortunately, after doing some googling, I've discovered you can only become a member by invitation. Doody!
I wish I could join organizations like the Lions club. Stupid rules.
