Balance
Andrew Nam, a student at Butterfield Trail Elementary School, left, reacts as he attempts to spell a word during the Washington County Spelling Bee at Woodland Junior High School in Fayetteville.
I hesitated to run this one for fear that it would make Andrew feel bad. He did so well to have placed in the top five of the event, but missing a word was hard and it made him sad. The photo was just too good not to run. It says so much about the event, its difficulty and how much it means to those kids. I always try to serve the reader without forgetting about the people we are covering. It's a tough balance to strike.

Great moment! Hope all is well down south.
Thanks, Andrew. I like this photo quite a lot. I think we've all tried hard at something and felt this way when we came up short.
That's the face I make whenever I do math.
The poor kid was so upset when he couldn't spell the word. I felt so bad for him.
