Kinda blue
Fayetteville High School junior band member Logan West plays a portion of music on a drum kit along with Blue Man Group drummers Ramsey Roustom, left, and Michael Petrucci as longtime Blue Man performer Kalen Allmandinger, center, watches during a visit from the performers to FHS. The group, which is in town for performances at the Walton Arts Center, came to the school to put on a workshop for members of the high school and junior high school bands.
When I saw this assignment come across my desk, I was excited to shoot the kids interacting with a member of Blue Man Group, but when I got there, it was clear that Allmandinger had not come in full makeup. I can't say that I blame him. It was 8 a.m. and they had performed the night before. The makeup takes a half hour to apply and another half hour to get out of. Plus, it would have been quite out of character for a Blue Man to speak.
I have to admit I was let down and began to worry that my photo wasn't going to be very strong. Then the musicians that play during the group's performances held a mock audition since most of the crowd was made up of high school and junior high school band members. They played a very complicated rhythm that the kids were then asked to duplicate. The music was daunting and something that I could never have replicated, but West was amazing.
